Bringing my experience and research results to the public is very important to me. Studying the local ecological communities can make it much easier to relate my science to what people might encounter in their environment on a daily basis. With the increasing prevalence of wildlife disease and spread of vectors to new environments, educating the public is extremely important.
I have collaborated with the Bloomington Parks and Recreation science educators to create an informative and interactive table about ticks and tick-borne disease for the Roving Naturalist program at the Bloomington City Farmers Market.
Farmers are a group at particularly high risk for tick exposure and infection. The materials described above were modified to be used in talks to a local farmer's group which also included a professor in integrated pest management and a family practice doctor specializing in vector-borne infections.
